SMART® Recovery Meetings
SMART Recovery stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. It is a fresh approach to Addiction Recovery and Family & Friends Support. The 4-Point Program® was created for people seeking a self-empowering and science-based option for overcoming addictive problems and communicating with loved ones struggling with addiction problems.
1) Build and maintain motivation 2) Cope with urges 3) Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors 4) Live a balanced life.
Our meetings are non-judgmental and stigma-free. SMART views addiction as a behavior that can be corrected, not a condition that defines a person’s identity. We discourage the use of labels such as “addict” or “alcoholic.”
Similarly, we don’t label those who have relapsed as “failures.” Almost everyone relapses while trying to recover. We treat these as opportunities for learning how to strengthen recovery efforts and identify what worked during the time before the relapse.
Are you looking for resources to help you support someone struggling with addiction? Is someone else’s addiction negatively affecting you but you don't know where to turn? Perhaps you’re seeking an alternative to tough love? SMART provides effective, easy-to-learn tools to help both you and your loved one. Our methods are based on the tools of SMART Recovery and CRAFT Therapy (Community Reinforcement & Family Training). SMART meetings provide concerned significant others the tools they need to effectively support first themselves with essential self-care measures and then their loved one, without supporting the addictive behavior. These tools also help Family & Friends better cope with their loved one’s situation and regain their peace of mind.
SMART Recovery’s Family & Friends program offers a two-pronged approach:
1. Tools to support the well-being of family & friends: Our self-empowering program teaches how to use tools based on cognitive therapy to help you level your emotional roller coaster and learn healthier ways of dealing with your situation.
2. Tools for providing effective, nonconfrontational support for a loved one: Our skills training for family members and friends develops positive communication skills and other strategies to help you change the dynamics of your relationship with your loved one.
This method has been proven to be more successful than harsh interventions or complete detachment.
