Are you looking for resources to help you support someone struggling with addiction? Is someone else’s addiction negatively affecting you but you don't know where to turn? Perhaps you’re seeking an alternative to tough love? SMART provides effective, easy-to-learn tools to help both you and your loved one. Our methods are based on the tools of SMART Recovery and CRAFT Therapy (Community Reinforcement & Family Training). SMART meetings provide concerned significant others the tools they need to effectively support first themselves with essential self-care measures and then their loved one, without supporting the addictive behavior. These tools also help Family & Friends better cope with their loved one’s situation and regain their peace of mind.
SMART Recovery’s Family & Friends program offers a two-pronged approach:
1. Tools to support the well-being of family & friends: Our self-empowering program teaches how to use tools based on cognitive therapy to help you level your emotional roller coaster and learn healthier ways of dealing with your situation.
2. Tools for providing effective, nonconfrontational support for a loved one: Our skills training for family members and friends develops positive communication skills and other strategies to help you change the dynamics of your relationship with your loved one.
This method has been proven to be more successful than harsh interventions or complete detachment.
If you want to address any addiction or harmful habit, SMART Recovery can help. Major changes can be overwhelming. SMART’s practical tools and social supports are proven effective to support and sustain successful long-term life change. Harmful habits include substance addictions (to alcohol and other drugs), as well as activity addictions (to behaviors like sex, relationships, spending, gambling, eating, exercise, and self-injury). No matter your harmful habit, SMART can help you change it.
SMART is not just any mutual-support program. Our science-based approach emphasizes self-empowerment and self-reliance. There’s no lifetime commitment; you decide when the time is right to move on. You choose how to personalize your own plan for successful change. SMART can be used both as a stand-alone program or in combination with other recovery paths. SMART Recovery recognizes the only one who can become truly expert on your recovery is you.
